Make a joyful noise unto the Lord

Scotty Irving is a spiritually-influenced noise artist. This photo was taken last Saturday at the Wherehouse in Winston-Salem, but I first met Scotty in 1999 when I did an article about him for the Eden Daily News, his hometown paper. I have no idea what the folks in Eden must have thought of this fellow who flings himself around the stage, bashing on various pieces of percussion while eerie electronic howls wail from the PA speakers. Not exactly "Amazing Grace," I'll tell you that.

Man of mystery

John Hart has written mysteries such as King of Lies and Down River. I took this picture of him for the cover of Yes!Weekly.

Five years on

Anti-war protesters marked the fifth anniversary of the start of the Iraq War with a demonstration Thursday in Greensboro. Hard to believe it's been that long, but the empire rolls on . . .

Darryl Hunt

Darryl Hunt spent 18 years in prison for a rape and murder he didn't commit before DNA evidence freed him. I took this picture for the cover of Yes!Weekly in Greensboro.

Pottery project

Gary Callicutt of Seagrove adds a handle to a coffee cup. I took this photo as part of a book project my class is working on about the potters of Seagrove.
