Tom Rowan, another view

Here's another one I took of Tom from outside the window, using a flash resting on the table to illuminate his face. He was looking for a photo that didn't emphasize his face so much. I like this one better than the first one.

Tom Rowan

Here's a photo I took of singer-songwriter Tom Rowan inside Fishbones restaurant at the corner of Walker Street and Elam Avenue. I used an on-camera flash as fill light.

Guitar builder, part 2

Here's a pair of Steve's instruments, a lap steel in the foreground and a custom-made bass in the back. Used the flash on a stick again.

Guitar builder

Here's Steve Wishnevsky, a guitar builder I shot for a photo essay. He's holding a form used to shape guitar bodies. I used a Vivitar flash on a stick with an umbrella softbox.

True Brothers

Here's the last cover I shot during my internship at Yes!Weekly. It's the retro-country duo the True Brothers. The plastic reindeer and FedEx truck in the upper-left background would be covered up by the publication's logo, so I wasn't worried about them. For lights I used a pair of Vivitar flashes on stands, one with a white umbrella and the other with a reflector, triggered by Chinese-made radio slaves. Not exactly Alien Bees but good enough for government work, as they used to say. Cover shots at Yes! were always tough because I was essentially dealing with an L-shaped area. The logo could be moved around but it would always take up 1/4 of the page and you had to keep that in mind. I think this was the best cover composition I came up with while I was there.

Bluesmen

Luther "Captain Luke" Mayer (left) and Macavine Hayes perform at a fundraising event for the Music Maker label. Proceeds from the sale of a house were going to support the label, which releases music by folk and blues artists.

Perpetual Groove

And here's the band she was watching, Perpetual Groove.
